Networks have long known that video is a powerful medium, but traditionally only the very large, wealthy networks could afford to use it. Now, with cheaper technology and free online video sites, any network can put video to use.
Why use Online Video?
- Common Story - Video is a great tool for storytelling. What is the story that brings your network together? When members of the network tell their common story, it strengthens the community.
- Social Ties - Introduce the members of your network. See some behind-the-scenes work. Video can be a window into the world of your members - share it!
- Communication - Is there something you need to tell your network? Would it help if you could "be there" to show people how to do it? Video is a great way to "show" something, rather than just talk (or type) about it.
Online Video in action: how video can support your work
- Distribute existing public services announcements. Digitize and upload exisiting PSAs (Public Service Announecments) or other short videos you may already have
- There are lots of examples of PSAs online. This one for the GLSEN Day of Silence is just one of many.
- Tell a story. Your network is full of stories - about the people you serve, why you do this work, or about some of you biggest accomplishments (or challenges).
- March of Dimes has several videos about the families they've worked with. This one features TV Journalist Jane Clayson
- Get creative. Sometimes the stories nonprofits have to tell
can be hard to hear. Video gives you a chance to get creative and tell
stories in new and fun ways.
- Susatinable Table did just that with their hit video, The Meatrix. A parody on the movie, The Matrix, this video tells what could be a very gruesome story in a fun, enagaging way.
- Encourage action. PSAs and stories are great, but if you want your constituents to do something, you've got to ask. Make sure the action you want people to take is clearly laid out in your video.
- Center for America's Future uses humor to get your attention, then tells youwhat you can do. (This is also a very good example of how video does not have to be expensive)
- Introduce yourself! Because video is so visual, its an effective tool for "introducing" people.
- Annaheim Ballet has had great success with their online videos, especially the ones profiling individual dancers.
- Demonstrate a technique. With video you don't have to rely on just telling someone or hoping they'll read the instructions correctly. Instead, you can show them. And this isn't just for instructions - you can impart lots of different kinds of information via video.
- The Endangered Frog Research Center used this video to train volunteers on specific tasks.
- Provide evidence. Sometimes video can be used as evidence.
- The Humane Society of the United States used this video to call attention to the treatment of cattle and the quality of food in our nations schools.
